Power exchange (PE) refers to the consensual transfer of control or authority from one person to another within a relationship or scene. This is the foundational concept underlying most D/s dynamics.
Power exchange exists on a spectrum from light bedroom-only dynamics to 24/7 Total Power Exchange (TPE) where control extends to most aspects of life. Most relationships fall somewhere between these extremes.
The exchange must be genuinely consensual, negotiated, and revocable. The power given can always be taken back. This distinguishes healthy PE from actual abuse, regardless of how extreme the dynamic appears.
Elements that may be exchanged include decision-making authority, physical autonomy, sexual availability, financial control, or daily life choices. Each relationship negotiates what power is exchanged and under what circumstances.
